How do we Be while Doing?

I have asked this question of many peers and mentors in the past several years. One beloved friend, Fiona Black, passed along the wisdom of “you DoBeDoBeDo”.

This is brilliant! This is for each moment, hour, day, week, month, year, and lifetime. Often, we get caught in the current of doing and action. Then when we finally pause, we look around and find ourselves way off course thinking “how did I get here?”

The natural rhythm of our nervous system cycles every 90-120 minutes between PNS (being, resting, recovering) and the SNS (doing, stress, activity). Due to our culture many of us get stuck living in our stress response system. But we can easily retrain our nervous system to become resilient again, resetting the natural rhythm our bodies are meant to live in.

Living in our natural rhythm we experience life on the path of least resistance. We get up and are active, we pause, look around, make sure we are on course then go back to activity again. Over and over we repeat this throughout each day, week, and year. In this pattern we remain aware. Even if we get swept up in the dramas of life the pause allows us to get out quicker, find our center and course once again, returning to our path.

How can we be sure we are on the right path?

There are several ways, told in even more ways. But the one that I have found the most powerful so far is to begin the day with one question.

How may I be of service today?

Then, let go. Let go of what this is ‘supposed’ to look like. Let go of ‘looking’. Feel. Broaden your gaze and notice the world around you. Every single interaction and experience matters. There are no mistakes.

You are here for a reason. The world needs you.
