Identity Crisis: You are not your experiences

Who am I?

What am I?

To answer these questions, I believe it is best to start with what we are not.

You are not your experiences.

Read it again.

No matter what has happened in your life, you are not any of the things you have experienced.

What is an experience?

At the most basic of levels an experience is energies interacting with each other. We experience something in the outer world, through our senses, which then triggers thoughts and emotions about whatever the experience is.

None of this is you though. You are the experiencer, the witness, the one that is aware of the experience.

Why is this important?

Most of us identify with our experiences. Tell me about yourself…. And go!

This is one of the greatest gifts we get given, the awareness that we are so much more than we knew. You are the cause, the creator. And until we are aware of this, we allow our experiences to run our lives, triggering thoughts and emotions which the intellect categorizes into likes and dislikes, creating beliefs and judgements.

The Buddha said, ‘all of life is suffering’. What did he mean?

Suffering is the space between our expectations and reality. Our experiences, when we identify with them, create our expectations. Reality is truth, creation expanding and creating, to be witnessed and experienced as art. Suffering is the space we are trapped in when we don’t know who and what we are.

You are not your experiences. You are Pure Potential. You are Creation expanded, expanding creation.

My wish today is to witness the miracles of Creation while maintaining inner peace.

My wish for you is the same.

Brightest of blessings,

Dawn xo
