Claiming Your Sovereignty

The Key to Living Your Authentic Life

How many choices or decisions have you made today that were NOT driven by fear, anger, worry, overwhelm, or insecurity? For many of us the answer is either none, or not many!

Have you ever felt like you’re not fully in control of your life? Like no matter what you do, something outside of you is pulling the strings? Maybe it’s other people’s expectations, societal norms, or even your own past experiences. If you’re nodding your head right now, you’re not alone. But here’s the truth: you have the power to change that. You have the power to reclaim your sovereignty.

What Is Sovereignty, Really?

Sovereignty is a term that’s often misunderstood. People tend to equate it with control—control over circumstances, other people, or even their own emotions. But true sovereignty isn’t about control at all. It’s about freedom. It’s about owning your power, making choices that align with your deepest truth, and living life on your terms.

When you claim your sovereignty, you’re not trying to control everything around you - this was tough for me as a recovering control freak! Instead, you’re stepping into a space of inner authority where you trust yourself to navigate whatever comes your way. It’s a shift from living reactively to living intentionally, from being a passenger in your own life to being the driver.

Let me repeat, It’s a shift from living reactively to living intentionally, from being a passenger in your own life to being the driver.

The Illusion of Control

We live in a world that often values control. We’re told that if we can just manage everything perfectly—our careers, relationships, emotions—we’ll finally feel safe and fulfilled. But the reality is, control is an illusion. No matter how hard we try, we can’t control everything. Life is unpredictable, and trying to control it only leads to stress, anxiety, and a sense of powerlessness.

Back in 2020 I felt I needed to buy a building to house a wellness clinic we were opening. I didn’t want a landlord to have control over anything, so this seemed like the right move. However, in hindsight I was just controlled by the bank, fluctuating rates, business partners, and the city! All the control I was trying to have was just an illusion.

Sovereignty, on the other hand, isn’t about controlling life. It’s about responding to life from a place of power and authenticity. It’s about knowing that no matter what happens, you have the inner resources to handle it. This is where true freedom lies—not in controlling the external, but in mastering the internal.

Embracing Inner Authority

At the heart of sovereignty is the concept of inner authority. This means making decisions based on your own values, beliefs, and desires, rather than being swayed by external pressures or fears. It’s about tuning into your own intuition and allowing it to guide you, rather than relying on the approval or opinions of others.

Inner authority is deeply connected to self-trust. When you trust yourself, you’re less likely to be thrown off course by challenges or setbacks. You know that you have the wisdom and strength to navigate whatever comes your way. And with this trust comes a profound sense of peace—because you’re no longer looking outside of yourself for validation or direction.

Self-Responsibility: The Foundation of Sovereignty

Sovereignty and self-responsibility go hand in hand. When you claim your sovereignty, you’re also claiming responsibility for your life. This doesn’t mean blaming yourself for everything that goes wrong—it means recognizing your role in shaping your reality.

Self-responsibility is about taking ownership of your thoughts, emotions, and actions. It’s about asking yourself, “How am I contributing to my current situation? What choices am I making, consciously or unconsciously, that are affecting my experience?” When you take responsibility in this way, you reclaim your power to change your life.

Releasing External Influences

One of the biggest challenges on the path to sovereignty is releasing the external influences that shape our lives. From a young age, we’re conditioned to follow the expectations of our families, communities, and society at large. We’re taught to seek approval, to fit in, and to conform to norms that may not align with our true selves.

But when you’re living in sovereignty, you start to see these influences for what they are—just noise. You begin to prioritize your own inner voice, and that becomes your guiding star. This doesn’t mean you stop caring about others or become isolated. It means you engage with the world from a place of wholeness, rather than from a place of needing approval or acceptance.

The Courage to Live Unapologetically

Living as a sovereign being requires courage. It’s not always easy to stand in your truth, especially when it goes against the grain of what others expect or accept. But this courage is essential if you want to live a life that’s true to who you are.

When you live unapologetically, you give yourself permission to be fully yourself, without editing or censoring to make others comfortable. You make choices that align with your values, even if they’re unpopular or misunderstood. And in doing so, you create a life that’s not only more authentic but also more fulfilling. This can seem scary or even downright terrifying. It was for me! However, as you begin to move through - healing and releasing - it is actually liberating.

Your Journey to Sovereignty Starts Now

So, what does claiming your sovereignty look like for you? Maybe it’s setting boundaries, making a big life change, or simply starting to listen more closely to your own inner guidance. Whatever it is, know that this journey is deeply personal and uniquely yours.

Remember, sovereignty is your birthright. It’s not something you have to earn or prove; it’s something you simply need to reclaim. And when you do, you’ll find a sense of freedom, peace, and empowerment that no one can take away from you.
